Born and raised in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, Stephen Snyder-Hill joined the military in 1988 under the delayed entry program.  He went to basic training At Ft Sill, OK in 1989 as a 13F (Fire Support Specialist).  He served 2 years and 11 months on Active Duty.  During that time he was stationed in Zirndorf Germany under 2-1 Field Artillery HHC.  His unit was activated during the first Gulf War on December of 1990.  They went to Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Kuwait during the 6 months they were deployed; then, were re-deployed to Germany in May.  He continued to serve his 8 years in the IRR.  He was honorably discharged in 1996.  After going to college and getting a Master’s Degree in Dietetics, Steve re-enlisted in March of 2001.  He was assigned to the 914th Combat Support Hospital in Blacklick, OH.  The unit changed its designation to the 256th CSH, and was activated to go back Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn in 2010, re-deploying back to Ohio in 2011.  During the 20 year span of the United States' involvement in Iraq, Steve was one of the first group of soldiers to enter the Middle East, and ended up being one of the last soldiers to leave in 2011, when President Obama ordered the last troops to return home. Now a Major, Steve is the recipient of over a dozen military awards and decorations including three Bronze Stars. Also in 2011, he was featured on national television asking a question regarding Don't Ask, Don't Tell of Republican 2012 White House hopefuls in a FOX News/Google/YouTube debate, and was infamously booed by the conservative audience. Since that time, outside of his military service and regular work in the public sector, he continues to be a voice for LGBT rights, military servicemembers and other causes. Perhaps most notably, in June 2013, he and his husband Joshua's organization MarriageEvolved sponsored taking 25 LGBT couples from across the country on a bus to the steps of the US Supreme Court in Washington, DC, to wed - just days prior to the Court's decision striking down the Defense of Marriage Act. He resides with Joshua in Columbus, Ohio.
